Centrica

Centrica Energy is a world leading player in offshore wind development and has constructed a number of offshore wind farms around the UK with joint venture partners. These include Barrow (JV with DONG Energy), Lynn and Inner Dowsing wind farms (JV with EIG), which have a total cable length of 33kV array cables of around 90km and 33kV export cables of around 36km. Centrica is constructing the 270 MW Lincs wind farm, a joint venture with DONG Energy and Siemens Project Ventures, which when complete will have around 110km of 33kV array cables and 96km of 132kV export cables. Lincs is expected to be fully operational by Q3 2013.

Centrica also has the following wind farms in pre-construction/development phases:

  • Race Bank (535MW). We currently anticipate a final investment decision for Race Bank in late 2013.
  • 4.2GW Irish Sea Zone development (with DONG Energy as JV partner). Rhiannon Wind Farm will be the first wind farm within the zone and is currently in the consenting phase.

Lincs

There are two 132kV export cables for the Lincs offshore wind farm, which run from the offshore substation in the wind farm to a shore landing near Port Sutton Bridge, a distance of 48km. The cables were installed using an installation barge "Discoverer" and a subsea cable plough.  The first 8km (shore end) were installed using a mechanical chain cutter.

There are 75no, 33kV array cables in the Lincs offshore wind farm, which connect up the wind turbine generator and transmit power to the offshore substation, giving a total of around 110km of buried cable.  The cables were installed using a combination of installation spreads, including barge "UR101" and a subsea cable plough.  This vessel spread was supplemented by other DP vessel spreads using a combination of simultaneous lay/burial and post-lay burial techniques.

Lynn & Inner Dowsing Offshore Wind Farms

There are 6no 33kV export cables for the Lynn and Inner Dowsing offshore wind farms, which run from the offshore wind farm to a shore landing near Skegness in Lincolnshire, a distance of 6km. The cables were installed using an installation barge "UR101" and a subsea cable plough.

There are 24no 33kV array cables in each of the Lynn and Inner Dowsing offshore wind farms, which connect up the wind turbine generators, giving a total of around 50km of buried cable.  The cables were installed using the barge "UR101" and a subsea cable plough, supplemented by a subsea cable trencher.
